OLIVIA THOMPSON

I would say my approach to making work is quite instinctive and experimental. I often create mood boards with images I find inspiring and that convey a certain mood I want to achieve and use that as a very loose basis for ideas and visual prompts.

“I mainly shoot on film which slows down the overall process. I find it allows me to be more thoughtful and considered in my approach as I don’t end up taking hundreds of variations of the same shot as I do with digital.”

I’ve been drawn to photographing nature recently and studying the layers and complexity of plants up close. I’ve been pairing these plants with everyday materials or objects that I collect or find around the house like a piece of packaging or some elastic bands.

Working with materials that I find lying around  allows for spontaneity and experimentation; I love playing with the colours and textures and seeing how light and composition can elevate something mundane and even transform it into something unrecognisable, making you question what you are looking at.

Olivia Thompson photographs for commercial clients and for personal projects.  She has had work published in The Photographic Journal and was shortlisted for the BJP Portrait of Britain Award. Clients include Alex Eagle, Sleek Mag, Clove Club and WWD Magazine.
