SASHA COMPTON
“I enjoy working with materials that are unpredictable (like clay, oxides or watercolours), it’s exciting working with materials that seem to have their own personality and embracing imperfections.”
My work focuses on joy and romance so it’s important to me that artworks don’t feel repetitive. I regularly put aside time to ‘play’. I often think you can sense if an artist was having fun when creating. When I am surrounded by colour, decorative elements or raw, rugged nature I feel the most inspired; be it feeling calm or excited. A place that evokes a lot of emotion that I am drawn back to is the Inner Hebrides and Yorkshire where I grew up. I try to visit places with lots of history and beauty places like these places evoke me the most.
I am heavily inspired by the world around me and constantly taking photos of everyday moments that might develop into a personal theme; nature, architectural details, colour palettes. Being an Artist / Illustrator I find my sketchbook time crucial to experiment with ideas before developing concepts for ceramic artworks. Once I’m happy with a painting I will start decorating my ceramics and firing them. I enjoy hand building ceramics and working with the clay but the decorative element is what really excites me.
There is a special depth to artworks made from outdoor elements like clay or natural pigments that are then celebrated inside in the home. It’s amazing what you can turn earth into.
