POLLY FLEURY
My interests and references are eclectic and include; urban street furniture (street lamps, bell bollards, traffic cones) elements from the periodic table, Dartmoor and it’s Tors, flying things, bees, aeroplanes (paper and metal), flags, maps, tree houses, beehives, bridle paths, orchids, sticks, tents, igloos, rowing boats, architectural details, ships and meteorites.
“I have a background in Fine Art and I’m fascinated with the relation between the materials and objects that surround us. How we mark time passing within patterns of the everyday. The fictional and biographical elements in my work, relating to objects and events, intertwine, entangle, and repeat in each piece.”
My practice is an enjoyable balancing act, developed over time, working ‘little and often’, a rhythm of the everyday. I hand sew, draw, appliqué and hand dye fabric with indigo, black walnut, and madder as well as buying beautiful cloth from trusted sources, one activity responding to another until a work is complete.
I work in different areas of my home and studio depending on the process, the weather and time of day, domestic spaces are re-invented depending on needs. I enjoy the challenge and spontaneity, the creative logistics. Dyeing indigo is a messy process requiring a good dry day in the garden. Black walnut, madder and weld are heated in the kitchen to release the dye. A rug is pulled back to cut large pieces of cloth on a wooden floor. I sit at a desk by a window to draw and sew.
Polly is originally from Devon, she graduated from art school in the late 80s in London where she now lives. She is always making, has fond memories of welding and currently does a lot of drawing and stitching. Her work is held in many private collections.
