TALIA WARSHAWSKY
I usually start by exploring clays. I really love the different aesthetics and working properties that each clay may have. Some clays might be rough but strong and some smooth and elastic. Once settled on a clay I explore glazes that may fit well. Different properties of glazes react differently with different clays and once I find a combination I like, that's usually my starting point. The process to get a final piece is a slow one, if there's one thing clay doesn't like, its to be rushed.
“A lot of my inspiration comes from techniques I learnt in Japan whilst I was there in a ceramic studio. There is a completely different way of working and a philosophy to how I was taught in the UK. There’s a lot of focus on making things in private that are from yourself and resist external pressures. This is something that has stuck with me.”
I mainly work in a grogged clay. I love the malleability of clay and how it can hold the marks of how it was made. Either through rough imprints of finger marks or scraped from tools, the clay really leaves behind a story of the process and this is something I try to utilise in my work.
My work isn't always functional but works more as a piece to complement the home. I come from a background in fashion so as I work I always think about how each piece can be used or put in the home whether as an accent or a show piece to really love.
