BAUD POSTMA
After a great deal of trial and error, I eventually came to a process by which I now create almost all my work; using a large format (10 x 8) camera to make exposures directly onto photographic paper without the need for a film negative.
“The process instills my work with various unique aesthetic properties but it also profoundly affects how I go about making the work. For example, the low light sensitivity of the paper (compared to film), requires a slower, more considered and collaborative approach to portraiture than would otherwise be needed.”
I like how the challenging analogue process has caused me to embrace, and on occasion, actively encourage unpredictable results that can appear - whether that be light leaks in processing, a colour shift in old paper stock or an unexpected texture from expiring chemicals.
After years of working and travelling extensively with several of the world’s leading fashion photographers, Baud set out to find his own voice. After much experimenting he has developed a unique and technical practice, shooting large format, 10x8 paper negatives, resulting in images with a distinctive texture and colour palette. Baud is fascinated by photography’s inherently complicated relationship with authenticity.
His work often explores the area between fact and fiction, representation and imagination. Baud has exhibited his work at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, 2022 and the National Portrait Gallery, 2017 and 18 after being shortlisted twice for the Taylor Wessing Portrait prize. He has also presented two solo exhibitions for Peckham 24, 2018 and 19. He has worked with a number of fashion brands including JW Anderson, Burberry, Paul Smith, and has been commissioned to shoot for numerous international publications including Vogue, Wallpaper, the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times.
