EMMELY ELGERSMA

I find unloved objects and transform them using paper pulp. I use newspaper which I feel works as a timestamp and preserves history in its own way, so you can have an object in your home that has embodied in it the news from 5 years ago.

If I am working on a large sculpture my full attention is on making that and this can take anything up to a month. However when I make smaller objects I tend to create them in batches as I have to wait on drying times and with this process I can work a little bit like a clock, waiting for one piece to dry whilst painting another.

My studio is currently located in an old zip factory in Stoke Newington which I share with one of my closest friends. In regards to inspiration I don't have a specific source it comes from, it could be at 5am when I cannot get back to sleep, having some rubbish tv programme on in the background or in the supermarket.

Emmely Elgersma was born in The Netherlands but lives and works in London. She has an MA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Arts and a BA in Textile Design from Central Saint Martins.
