KATIE MOORE

Ever since my illustration studies, I’ve always had an interest in three-dimensional sets and installations. I like to think of my clay objects as ‘props’ which I can paint and direct on stage; my practice following the framework of the theatre.

“My painted designs take inspiration from theatre sets and also my natural surroundings. For each series that I make, I use recent digital and crayon sketches to guide me through painting the clay surfaces.”

I used paper porcelain clay to handbuild this collection. The paper clay allows me to build relatively large forms which once fired, don’t weigh too much. The clay is also quite forgiving when adding wet and dry coils together which is an advantage when working in a hot studio over the summer. I use a mixture of underglazes and slips to paint the clay surface. The white finish of this clay is the perfect blank canvas for colour.

Handbuilding my clay objects coil by coil is the most timely yet freeing aspect of my practice. I work on a series of forms at once, following no specific plans on what each form will look like. This is when I have the time to reflect and consider my painting process.

I enjoy documenting my natural surroundings through drawing. Having a small sketchbook on a long walk or in the local park, I can make quick responsive marks which I may later manipulate into a digital collage or a motif on a clay surface.
